The Apo Mekhanes Theo, or Deus Ex Machina (God from the machine), was a mechanical contraption used to bring the actors playing gods onto the stage in Acient Greek theatre. In this spirit, I constructed a series of “angels” made of found wood and industrial materials collected around the abandoned Saceba cement factory, mirroring the unused machines that once churned within the building. Reminiscent of the infamous cargo cult rituals of Melanesia and Australia of the Second World War, these quasi ceremonial structures suggest a blurring of the sacred with the technological.
